The T-Shirt features a sketch by Noah Butcher of Terry Stringer’s iconic skate spot, the Mountain Fountain. The Bronze Cubist Volcano was situated in Aotea Square from 1981 to 2008. It now lives at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell, Auckland.
Noah created the illustration for a magazine layout in 2003 (Issue 12) as part of a series of drawings depicting the spots in the Square’s original layout. It wasn’t until the mid-2010s that the graphic was first offered on a T-Shirt.
Somewhere along the line, the name was changed to “Thinking Outside the Square” (the original article was called “Thinking Inside the Square”). I guess it just sounded cooler.
