A Backyard Ramp In Parakai

Jason King remembers the ramp that bought local legends together.

It was 1990 when I built this backyard vert ramp in Parakai, north of Auckland. There were a lot of ramps around at that time, but none as big as this one. It had 10-foot transitions with 2 feet of vert and was 5 sheets wide with a marine ply surface. That’s not so big by today’s standards, but at the time it was a beauty.

There were a few heavy hitters who made the journey to ride the ramp: Morri, Greg Elisara, Stu Kendall, and others. Nick Clegg and the North Shore crew were regular visitors, showing us locals how it’s really done and helping us lift our game.

It was extra special when Stu Kendall showed up. Stu was the epitome of power, grace and style on a skateboard. He was inspirational wherever and whatever he rode, but on vert he was the best, a New Zealand skating legend!
