The Mount Skateboard Association held the first of what they hope to be many vert jams at the Blake Park vert ramp in Mount Maunganui this past weekend.

The day didn’t start off too well because of the previous few days of rain, but the boys managed to dry the ramp out, and the sun came out to give a helping hand too. It turned out to be a great way to spend a sunny afternoon with local band The Rift providing the music, and even a free sausage sizzle.

This ramp was built over twenty years ago and it’s only with the help of the MSA that it is still standing and being maintained. The ramp is now once again scheduled for “decommission” in 2011, so the MSA are now embarking on a series of fund raising to try and prevent us from losing such an integral part of the skate community. The Rollercoaster event went down on Saturday 19th at Auckland’s North Shore Stadium. It looks like the event was a total hit. We just got a few pics and the results through from Sophie Allen. We’ll be back with more in-depth coverage soon.

I might lead a sheltered life but I think this is pretty amazing. Sebastien Toutant, at only 15 years old, doing a double cork 1080 at last year’s Billabong Snow Stock.

The fine people at ALC, CIRCA and CHEAPSKATES Wellington put on this fine event at the Civic Square on the weekend. Apart from interuptions from the Astrology Society’s rocking band and Wiggles supporters (yes, through that door to the right of frame hundreds, if not thousands, of Wiggles supporters lay waiting to be a pain in the butt) I’d say the event went off without a hitch. Although it was cut a little short, due to the aforementioned reasons some excellent skateboarding maneuvers got “thrown down”. Guy Coney is busy wipping together a video of the event, which we will have to you shortly. And I will load up the rest of the sequences once I find which folder I saved them in. Manual contributor and design lord Chris Jackson ran a deck design workshop at The New Dowse on the weekend in conjunction with the Board Art exhibition that is currently on there. He has this to say about the day. “It was a great success and every one of all ages enjoyed the three hour session. Although all of the boards didn’t get ‘finished’, there was some great work and ideas, and many kids took their boards and artwork to finish at home. Everyone walked away with their designs, an issue of Manual and a couple (or three) posters. Some of the graphic layout templates that we designed for the workshop were also taken by a local school teacher to help teach kids numeracy and basic mathematics through skateboarding! Three lucky individuals Tamati, Jackson and (little) Miles walked away with a Joseph Whaanga Deck, a set of wheels and a T-shirt respectively, all donated by ABC. A big thank-you to everyone involved, and to Lucas Wotawa for sanding numerous battered old decks and generally being a good egg.”

Wellington welcomed back the bowl-a-rama crew for the second year in a row. After a week of solid rain the day of the event was met with fine weather.
