The Skate Of The Art skateboard art exhibition is on this week at Te Papa Museum, Wellington, New Zealand. There is a big opening celebration on this Friday evening (Feb 11th) from 7pm. If you are going to be in Wellington this Friday then please RSVP here or to suzannet@tepapa.govt.nz and come along. This is HUGE. The most important cultural institution in New Zealand is recognising the fantastic culture of skateboarding for the first time with this exhibition, so it is something not to be missed. It also runs as part of the Oakley BOWL-A-RAMA week of festivities.

SBA 8 is back in action for another successful year. For those looking for a creative outlet and a chance to show your skills, enter Ride’s SBA 8 to compete against fellow snowboarders and artists from all over the globe. New for this year, Ride’s Annual Snowboard Art Contest will feature a full slide show to include ALL of the entries and we will be hosting a peoples’ choice vote online. Entrants are competing to win cash, prizes and – most importantly – the envy of their peers.

Judged by the Ride Snowboards Creative Team, the top 30 entries are identified and posted on the Ride website and in February will be displayed at evo’s TimesInfinity Gallery in Seattle and SBA8 art reception. The finalists will compete for the grand prize of $1,000 and a custom snowboard featuring their winning artwork. Every year there are many remarkable and imaginative entries, so get a little creative and a lot crazy, and we’ll look forward to seeing your entry for SBA8!

I was in Oamaru at the end of last year shooting a story for the last issue and I noticed everyone had these amazing stencil-like pieces on their grip tape. I was too ignorant at the time to ask who actually made them, until a few weeks ago when Jeremy from Soul Surf Oamaru got in contact with me. Turns out Ryan Moore, (who was also one of the main builders of the famous upstairs mini ramp) is behind these creations.

Lay your eye/eyes over these.

Manual contributor and design lord Chris Jackson ran a deck design workshop at The New Dowse on the weekend in conjunction with the Board Art exhibition that is currently on there. He has this to say about the day. “It was a great success and every one of all ages enjoyed the three hour session. Although all of the boards didn’t get ‘finished’, there was some great work and ideas, and many kids took their boards and artwork to finish at home. Everyone walked away with their designs, an issue of Manual and a couple (or three) posters. Some of the graphic layout templates that we designed for the workshop were also taken by a local school teacher to help teach kids numeracy and basic mathematics through skateboarding! Three lucky individuals Tamati, Jackson and (little) Miles walked away with a Joseph Whaanga Deck, a set of wheels and a T-shirt respectively, all donated by ABC. A big thank-you to everyone involved, and to Lucas Wotawa for sanding numerous battered old decks and generally being a good egg.”

Tim ‘Wallow’ Pierce has announced his exhibition titled ‘Perceptible’ being held in AK. Tim dominates the pages of Manual, Spoke and many overseas zines. Now moving into film, working closely with nzsnowboard.com and more recently the Hyundai Long Board Tour, Wallow knows how to diversify his bonds. Almost a career of work at the age of 21.

It is with great pleasure that I announce I am holding a Tim Pierce multimedia exhibition titled Perceptible in just under two weeks time. The exhibition will be held at the Depot Art Space Gallery in Devonport, Auckland from April 11-23rd and you are all invited. The Exhibition opening is on Sat April 11th at 2pm, so come and mingle for the afternoon/evening. The exhibition is a celebration of New Zealands beauty, talent and action sports culture. There will be several large pieces of my photography work, along with my high definition video work projected onto a wall. All photography pieces are for sale, so get in quick. Postcards for the exhibition are being distributed tomorow, if you would like one simply email me your address. ( tim at zerosandones.co.nz ) A huge thanks to my sponsors, NZsnowboard.com, Burton, Gravis, The Northface, Spoke & Manual. The exhibition statement is as follows.

Perceptible – The works of Tim Pierce

Perceptible is a multi media exhibition, displaying a wide range of works from New Zealand photographer and film maker Tim Pierce. Originally from Wanaka, Tim has spent his life travelling New Zealand and abroad documenting action sports and their associated cultures. From this stems Perceptible, a series of innovative and artistically rich images that capture New Zealand’s top snowboard, mountain bike, and BMX talent, whilst showcasing Aotearoa’s beauty through eerie dramatic moods, unique textures, shapes and pure images. Resonant in visual magnitude, the pieces evoke strong perceptions and connotations of outdoor adventure and culture through the mind and senses. Screenings of high definition video projects will also play throughout the two week exhibition, illustrating Tim’s diversity in the world of film. Be sure you attend to celebrate New Zealand’s beauty and talented sporting culture as seen through the lens of our country’s leading action sport photographer.
