Recently I’ve been deep in skate photos, but believe it or not, skating isn’t everything.

Here are three photographers, that over the last decade or so, I’ve drawn inspiration from in one way or another. These three shoot in an easily discernible documentary style, as deliberate as it is natural, if that’s even possible.

I’m hyped on these guys, and when I’m lacking inspiration I go back and check this shit out.

Eugène Atget

Mum travelled to Paris in the early 2000s and brought me back a photo book by Eugène Atget. I’d never heard of him before, but I was immediately drawn to his photos. He was an interesting character to say the least, but the thing I like
about him the most is that he never thought of himself as a photographer. He had wanted to be an actor as a young man, but instead found himself photographing the streets and people of old Paris for several decades around the turn of last century, selling the images as reference material to the artists of Montmatre.
He inadvertently ended up creating the biggest collection of Paris street photos from the period, and after his death in 1927 was celebrated as one of the true masters of photography.
I think it’s his empty street scenes that grab me the most. He shot on plate, his exposures long, so his landscapes have a desolate, otherworld feeling.

Eugene Atget

Eugene Atget

Eugene Atget

James Nachtwey

I don’t remember how I came across James Nachtwey’s photojournalistic work, but it’s artistic style and confrontational subject matter kicked me right in the nuts. The guy has covered every major conflict since the early 80s, amassing one of the most fantastic and terrifying records of human suffering.
If you are in JB Hifi, grab a copy of his largely ‘Point of View’ documentary War Photographer. It was filmed over a decade ago, using small cameras attached to his Canon Film SLRs putting you right in the thick of it. Amazing stuff. His narration alone is worth the watch. He’s one cool customer.

James Nachtwey

James Nachtwey

James Nachtwey

Tom Gould

Tom is probably the best thing to come out of New Zealand in the last few years. Based in New York for the time being, Tom possesses a rare gift. Just look at his pictures, you’ll see what I mean. Tom also makes music videos, directing underground hits from the likes of Mayhem Lauren, Action Bronson and David Dallas. Tom did some assisting for me in the past, but if he had learned anything from me, he’s done his best to forget it. His work is years ahead of his peers.

I hope you enjoy these pics as much as I do, if you get a chance, look them up, their work is worth it.

As a side note for nerds, all of these guys work/worked on film. Good shit.
