STOMPING GROUNDS

In one of the first few Waybacks I threw the Puma Clyde up. I was ranting ’bout how cheap you used to be able to get them joints. The asking price was like 50 spot in the early 90s. Well, a funny thing happened to me on Sunday morning. I had mad toothache that started on Fri night. by Sat night I was so doped up on painkillers that I crashed fairly early. If I ever go to bed early on a weekend, I make it an absolute must to get up at the crack of dawn and hit the outlet stores the next day. I usually try to see if FILA has actually got F13s back in stock. As per usual the answer was NO! This task is actually pretty painful. Seeing the Timberland store selling sample shit at nearly full retail, and the adidas store not even having any originals on any of their shelves, is enough to reduce the bargain hunter in me to tears and ask “why do I keep coming back?”. So, I was about to leave and I saw that the Puma store had a 50 percent off storewide sale. Thing is this store sucks balls. In saying this I still went in. Who knows they may have had a semi wearable pair of some out of it model that wasn’t from ‘my time’. Sure enough it’s all fluorescent hi-top or running sort of shit. I was about to leave and I thought, better check the sample rack. Nothing. So I turn around to walk out down the woman’s aisle, and right next to me is a whole shelf three levels high of black with white Suedes and Clydes! Holy Shit!! Starting to freak out. Where’s my size? What’s the price? So I walk outta the joint with 3 pairs at 50 spot each. Grand Total for 3 is $150. What year is it? 2013? And I’m still paying the same price for my Pumas. Now ain’t that some shit?!

FINE TUNING

Chris Tucker is one badass motherfucker… If you haven’t copped Dead Presidents by now then I seriously suggest you get yourself down to your local ‘specialty’ DVD store or learn how to use the internet to its fullest extent. My homie Swin asked me where this movie stood next to my number one, New Jersey Drive. I said pretty much right over its shoulder. Soundtrack is fairly fucking at the top of its peers also. Flex game.

For many years Raglan has been firmly on the radar, famous for serving cups of tea to the surf culture in Manu Bay’s green room. Now the masses that migrate west for the summer have something new to write home about. Postcards are going to spread the news with buzzwords like “rad” and “gnarly”, referring to how great the add-ons to the Raglan Skate Park are. Once again Jason Parkes and his crew at Premium Skate Park Designs have come to the rescue, producing a quality extension to the existing cookie cutter skate park. They have even fixed Tom Smithers’ mistakes on his 2002 design that lacked craftsmanship and originality.

The 240 metre squared expansion is designed as a snake run fit for the new decade. The foundation is made up of a black marbled concrete, imitating Raglan’s West Coast black sand. The transitions are well designed for speed and tie in with the West Coast theme emulating the ocean swells. The park lies on the edge of the Raglan harbour, constantly smelling the ocean’s salty breath. While this makes for a pleasant skateboarding experience, don’t let it catch you out. Keep wax handy, as the coping is known to stick due to the salt air. It is a well-calculated layout with a good flow for runs; just watch the busy holiday traffic.

Just a quick note to the greater public on behalf of skateboarders, young or old, local or vagrant: please be considerate. Use the seats as they were intended. If you’re inclined to sit on the ledges, don’t be offended when asked to move and use this as an excuse for your dad to come down and start Royal Rumble 2011.

On a lighter note, get a crew together and make one last summer road trip to Raglan. Hit the fresh turf and end the day in the surf. You will not be disappointed.

How to get there
If you’re travelling North or South you want to hit SH39 until you meet SH23, which runs all the way from Hamilton to Raglan. Once you arrive in Raglan SH23 will turn into Bow St. Take a left down Wainui Road. After the one-way bridge take a right down Marine Parade. Hold it out and before you know it you’ll be ripping.

Closest skate shop
GagRaglan down on Volcom Lane is located in the township of Raglan. Keep an eye out, as it is signposted off Bow Street and Wainui Road. They will have you sorted for all your skateboard needs. Heck, they can even give you your caffeine fix too.

Parks nearby
If you detour down Te Mata road off SH23 you’ll find a primary school with a Mini ramp. If you want to check out a scenic waterfall, Bridal Veil Falls is a short drive past the school. If that’s not enough for you then head back to Hamilton to get a dose of what it has to offer.

Porirua, 6 February 2012: Hundreds of skateboarders gathered at Te Rauparaha park to attend and compete in the Porirua Skate Jam as part of the Festival of the Elements Waitangi Day celebration. Skaters from all over the greater Wellington region, and some from as far as the Hawkes Bay, battled it out in the sun-soaked park for their part of cash and product prizes worth more than $3000.

“The event went off without a hitch” said event manager Cameron Smith, “everyone skated hard and some incredible tricks went down. Our staff did a fantastic job too, we couldn’t have asked for a better day.” Long time Porirua Skate Jam competitor and local skater, Mitch Jago, took out the top spot in the Open section, while Keanu Robinson won the 16 and Under division. Last year’s winner of the 8 and Under section, Santana, won this year’s 12 and under. Rico won the 8 and Under section and Enya Hunt placed first in the Women’s. For further info on the competition or the Poriua Action Sports Association email david@firstfloor.co.nz.

At high noon on 25th February, 2012 Auckland will once again play host to over 30 of New Zealand’s finest skateboarders. They will battle it out in Auckland’s iconic Aotea Square on a purpose built set-up, for their part of a NZD $6000 prize pool.

Once again a purpose built course is being crafted under the watchful eye of Rhys Campbell. “The course is looking good this year. We’ve taken the step and rail set up from last year and added some new features that’ll kept things interesting. Everyone killed it last year and had a great time, so expect more shredding and good times in 2012.”

This year’s City Squared champion will walk away three thousand dollars richer, with NZD$6000 split between the top eight finalists.

Stay tuned for more info on the course and rider line-up.

The Billabong City Squared Skateboard Invitational is presented by Sony Ericsson with support from Monster Energy, Amazon Boardstore, The Edge, Von Zipper, Nixon, Manual Magazine and Skinny.

Where: Aotea Square, Queen Street, Auckland
When: Noon til 5pm, Saturday 25th February

Music: Suspiria by Razorwyre off of the album Coming Out.

Press Release – DC Shoes is set to embark on its Rediscover Oz skate tour in celebration of the recent launch of their Rediscover DC campaign and the highly anticipated announcement of two new pro riders, Mike Mo Capaldi and Nyjah Huston.

Mike Mo and Nyjah will be joined by fellow global skate team riders; Chris Cole, Mikey Taylor, Matt Miller, Wes Kremer and Evan Smith who will then join up with Australian team riders Kieran Reilly, Marty Girotto, Bugs Fardell and Jake Hayes on the Gold Coast 19 January 2012 for a 19 day tour of the east coast of Australia.

DC Australasia brand director, Alex Hawkins said, “It’s a real honor to have Mike Mo and Nyjah join the DC Skate team and an even bigger honor to have them tour Australia with Chris Cole, Mikey Taylor, Wes Kremer and Matt Miller. What a way to start 2012!”

“This is Mo and Nyjah’s first DC tour yet—the first, of many more to come. The line up on this trip is insane. With the likes of Cole, Kremer, Miller, Mikey, Evan, and of course the two “new guys,” this squad has set a new standard for DC, and skateboarding in general. There’s no better place to kick off our Rediscover campaign than down under, and we are excited to join the AU DC riders in the first DC tour of 2012; Rediscover Oz,” said DC Skate Team Manager, Jimmy Astleford.

The DC pro/am team riders will be hitting the streets of Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne as well as attending in store signings and skate demos in all three states. Their skating will be documented by world renowned US skate photographer, Mike Blabac, US filmer Chris Ray, as well as Australian photographer Andrew Peters, and New Zealand born filmer Leigh Bolton.
