On 6 May, the night of the Perigee or ‘super moon’ we got together and had a night skate at Waitangi Park Bowl, in Wellington. Some people say that the full moon attracts all the crazies but in this case it was due to the fact that daylight savings and the scooter invasion on the weekends has made it hard for everyone to get together for a bowl session. The park has lights but they do not sufficiently light the Bowl leaving it with blind spots, so we all put in for a generator, rigged up some halogen lights and a great night was had by all.

7th May, 2012: It is with great excitement that we announce the release of both Manual Magazine and Spoke Magazine on iTunes Newsstand.

Through a partnership with one of the world’s fastest growing digital content distribution companies, PixelMags, we are now able to bring our premium content to a broader audience by offering a seamless connection to our titles through the Newsstand platform. This move will enable readers in New Zealand, Australia and across the world immediate access to our titles on mobile devices.

The release of Manual and Spoke on iTunes Newsstand brings further strength to our existing online presence and adds significant value to traditional print advertising campaigns across both magazines.

It also allows us to build awareness of New Zealand talent and companies, both locally and internationally, by making our magazine accessible to new readers regardless of their proximity to traditional magazine retailers. Mobile readers can look forward to extended and enriched content in our future digital releases.

About First Floor Publishing

It all started at our parents’ houses back in 1997 on a dodgy PC. We were fuelled by junk food and cheap Malaysian. It was in this environment that Manual Magazine was born. Spoke Magazine was founded in 2001, and in 2003 we started First Floor Publishing so we could have a collective home for our magazines. In September 2008 our magazines became available in digital form for the first time.

Manual is now New Zealand’s leading skateboarding and snowboarding magazine, featuring national and international coverage of skateboarding, snowboarding, music and art, with an emphasis on quality photography, illustration and graphic design. Manual is published four times a year—March, June, September and December—and is available throughout New Zealand and Australia, and online at firstfloor.co.nz. Manual is also available digitally through iTunes Newsstand and Zinio.

Spoke was created in 2001 by Caleb Smith and Emma Gee as a response to the vast amount of generic mountain bike magazines available at the time. Spoke strives to bring a fresh and innovative look at mountain biking through original content, bold design and high quality production values. It provides an unbiased look at the lives and activities of mountain bikers in Aotearoa, consistently pushing the boundaries of mountain bike photography and graphic design. Spoke is published five times a year—February, April, June, September and December—and is available throughout New Zealand and Australia, and online at firstfloor.co.nz. Spoke is also available digitally through iTunes Newsstand and Zinio.

About PixelMags

PixelMags Inc. is one of the world’s fastest growing digital content distribution companies that is transforming the future of digital publishing by changing how publishers distribute interactive branded content. PixelMags reaches millions of digital readers daily, in over 33 different languages, and represents such publishers as Hearst UK, Crain Communications Inc., Imagine Publishing, Dennis Publishing and more. PixelMags is a privately held company, with offices located in Los Angeles and London. Follow PixelMags on Facebook (facebook.com/pixelmags) and Twitter (@pixelmags).

Wednesday 2nd May 2012: It’s a hard road to the top and once you get there what do you do? You bask in the glory and look back at the trail of shred you’ve left behind.

We here at Manual Magazine thought it was about time to reward our finest skateboarders by giving them their rightful title, that of New Zealand Skater of the Year.

From this year on our accomplished panel will keep a watchful eye over the moves and shakes in our fair industry. Not only will they be looking for one consummate individual to crown as our finest, but they will be taking notes about our under and over achievers, the rebels and the upstarts, the slow burners and the yearners. Awards will be forthcoming to those people who define our industry in each and every way, be it from the podium or the pit below.

In February next year, with input from our readers, we will announce the first winner of Manual’s inaugural New Zealand Skater of the Year award. Other outstanding kiwis will also be decorated with fitting titles to match their accomplishments.

Until then, get out there and do your best, or worst. We’ll be watching.

For information and sponsorship opportunities please contact us here.

A new video featuring Australia and New Zealand rippers from Arcade and Pass Port to celebrate the release of their new ANZAC colab line of product. The official blurb is below, head over to Arcade or Pass Port to check out the products.

All throughout the skateboard industry there are links. They go past

borders, countries, and in certain cases, languages.

Sometimes you come accross a company doing something with total
vision, totally dedicated not to just advancing skateboarding and
supporting those around them but to making quality product and great
clothes.

Pass Port is a company like that. Founded in Sydney by skater Trent
Evans, Pass Port has become a staple amongst skaters in Australia, New
Zealand and abroad.

Combining strong aesthetics, quality boards, and an amazing team and
videos to boot, Pass Port is a company we have admired since they
started, and stocked since we opened.

We are very pleased to announce a collaboration with Pass Port coming
this ANZAC Day.

The idea was to create something influenced by both brands ideas,
product that could be worn and ridden on either side of the ditch, or
indeed around the world, and represent our corner of the Pacific.

We went with an emphasis on quality. The caps are reproductions of
heritage baseball caps dating back nearly 100 years, fastened with a
leather strap and metal badge on the back.

The decks are of the utmost quality, and a percentage of every deck
sold will go to the ANZAC poppy fund.

Launching on ANZAC Day, we cast aside any notions of rivalry and focus
on the shared heritage of NZ and Australia.
