“In August my good friend Bernard turns 40. With a few month of’s out there, it’s time to showcase a true legend. With Colin Evans’ blessing, expect gems spanning over 2 decades. Stand by for daily updates” – Glenn Wignall
"It says something about NZ spots when the only flat gap you can find sits precariously on the edge of a cliff… Even with a good sweeping this spot was riddled with OSH hazards, and @b_foo was hitting it so fast every time he did his thing I was plagued with horrific visions of snagging a stone and going over the edge head first. Unfounded, of course. That backside flip is utterly beautiful." – Dan Kircher by Dan K/Bill Bycroft #monthoffoo reposted from @gwignall
There was a Boom skateboards demo in my hometown of Palmerston North one day so I called in sick to my supermarket job to go watch them skate. A young Bernie was there and making this new hobby of mine look way too easy. Fast forward a few years and we are skating and filming in Wellington on a daily basis. Every few months we would do a little road trip back to Palmy to skate The Square, pretend we were at Love Park and then hit up a bunch of spots around town. Everyone looked a the rail at this spot, not the ledge. Mostly for good reason, it was rough as f**k. Bernie backtailed it and @davidread shot it masterfully enough to cut out a stair and make it look higher (check my story or @gwignall the ad)! Happy 40th @b_foo! Thanks for all the good times over the last 17+ years. Let's go film a trick! #monthoffoo
B I R T H D A Y B O Y S 40 & 2 (minus a day) There's a lot Jett can learn from his old man (that saying rings true now he's into the next decade)… @b_foo B is nothing short of a legend, not only in the skateboarding realm, but in life itself. Genuine, kind, hardworking, patient as a mo-fo, determined and loyal are just a few of his beautiful qualities. It's a pleasure & an honour to do life with him. This shot, perfectly captured by uncle Shauny @shauntunny is him in his element. Enjoying time on the board with his buddy. He's a man of few words but I know this #monthoffoo means the world to him. As he's put it. "It gives him the warm & fuzzies". So a massive shout out to @gwignall & the skateboarding crew for absolutely making his 40th one to remember
FULL PART – "New instalment on #monthoffoo This is a teaser of @b_foo part from the first Strobe video in 97 (full part is linked in my bio). @irrom @bradluck and I edited this vid on a media100 edit suite at my work after hours, I remember being blown away by Bernies footage and 20 years on he's still going strong! "Ok my turn – MONTH OF FOO! I've known Bernie for a solid few years now. He jumped on the portal not long after we started Pass~Port & to think he has been in his mid to late 30s the whole time is seriously wild. This photo was used for one of our first print ads in the Skateboarders Journal in 2011. This spot in ACT is called the "Insane-o drains” for a reason…it's fucked. So Bernie the wizard performed an effortless switch back tail. Shot by Jake Mein with no footage ever to be seen. This move, is just like Bernie, mysterious & mind bending." @pass_port #monthoffoo
“Here we have Bernie @b_foo doing a nose-grind tail grab in a “life’s a beach” t-shirt. Life was definitely not a beach in 1991 in Upper Hutt. It was a crusty as fuck vert ramp. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is the earliest photo of Bernie we could find for #monthoffoo and it used to live on our fridge when we lived together. Shot on a disposable camera with no footage because everyone was too busy actually skating.” – @gwignall
@b_foo 360 flip on Lambton Quay way back around 17 years ago, I think the switch heel from a different angle was run in the mag and one of my first marginal images that was published. It’s been a trip going from fanning out pretty hard watching Bernie skate at the rec center, to nights at the flat with Lonnie’s sister, into shooting and road tripping around the country getting shit done. Now he’s 40 but still staying true to the dream. True legend! Follow the #monthoffoo hashtag for more via a wide ranging of talented humans that have invaded Bernies personal space over the years. Hopefully I can dig a few more out too.

“Who was kicking off runs in 1995 with switch tre’s? Probably not you. Well, @b_foo was! On a perfect winter’s day, a relatively unknown, B Foo managed to shut-down every skate spot Napier had at the time. Word would soon spread! It was a pleasure rolling with B then – just as it is now!” – words & @frzafraser #monthoffoo
