Billabong New Zealand HQ (Tuesday 21th February, 2012): Over 30 of New Zealand’s best skateboarders will be putting their bodies on the line during a massive invite-only showdown on purpose-built street-course in Auckland’s iconic Aotea Square this Saturday.

With only a few days to go until the second annual Billabong City Squared event anticipation is at boiling point for what is set to be another gnarly battle where skaters will give it their all for their share of the NZD $6000 prize pool.

Event sponsor, Billabong, have redesigned the purpose-built course, under the watchful eye of Rhys Campbell. “The new course opens up more options for the skaters. I’m sure they will all be able to kill this course just like they did last year’s.”

Feilding’s Sean Cupples, who placed 3rd in last year’s event, is amped to compete again. “After a surprise 3rd last year I just want to have fun and feed off of the rad vibe that the Billabong Invitational gives. I’m sure some crazy tricks are going to be thrown down. The course is looking a lot more interesting with extra run up and the likes of the Euro-gap and hubbas. This is right up my alley so I’m looking forward to skating with everyone on Saturday 25th.”

“The park setup looks really cool, it looks more fun than last year. Every year the level of skateboarding is going up, this year will be the same. I can’t wait to see it!” Said skateboarder Dan Kaspar, who placed 7th in 2011 event.

Contestants will be judged by New Zealand skateboard legends Justin Watene, Chey Ataria and Justin Keeley on the most technical, progressive and risky tricks they can perform.

“If the weather plays its part we’ll be in for an amazing day watching New Zealand’s top skateboarders throw down in Aotea Square.” Said event organizer AJ Matthews.

Skating begins at 1pm. Finals will commence at around 3pm. Spectators are urged to grab positions from High Noon. Giveaways will be made available to the crowd!

The 2012 Billabong City Squared champ will walk away three thousand dollars richer, with NZD$6000 split between the top eight finalists.

The Billabong City Squared Skateboard Invitational is presented by Sony Ericsson with support from Monster Energy, Amazon Boardstore, The Edge, Von Zipper, Nixon, Manual Magazine and Skinny.

Billabong City Squared is an alcohol free event. As skateboarding is prohibited in Aotea Square event sponsor, Billabong, will be setting up a free skate area with rails and boxes for the public to skate in.
