Monday: Style Wars

Posted by craighaze on Monday September 19 2011

The original Hip Hop doco? Style Wars is an amazing look back at New York in the late 70′s and early 80′s via the lens of those involved in the rap, graffiti and breakdancing scenes. With a very cool retro-rapping soundtrack this hugely celebrated documentary comes courtesy of Tony Silver, Henry Chalfant and the ever-valiant PBS channel. Filled with great interviews, and even greater music, Style Wars has become a legendary little film thanks to it’s sympathetic take on the burgeoning B-boy scene and the film makers desire to treat their subjects with the respect they deserve. When everyone else was writing them off as thugs and hoodlums Silver and Chalfant just told the unvarnished truth and ended up profiling an enormously important scene in it’s infancy.
