Emeralds: Does it look like I’m here?

Posted by craighaze on Friday September 16 2011

Emeralds are a komische/progressive electronic trio from Ohio. That’s a very long way from Berlin, but they manage to harness the best of the German ambient and eccentric electronics scenes with a futuristic burst of burbling, pulsing synths. If I had to use one word to describe this album, it’d be ‘blissful’.

After releasing a ton of super-limited CDrs Emeralds have finally gotten round to releasing something more accessible (both in it’s availabity and overall sound). Unlike the rest of their back catalogue Does it look like I’m here? is a lot more organized and listener friendly. Bubbling pieces of sexed up aural escapism are on offer here. With plenty of swirling retro keyboard work, and blissful waves of trippy effects, Emeralds provide a hallucinogenic glide through the sonic galaxy. This album could easily have been recorded in 1972, but like the similar synthesized pioneering unit Zombi, Emeralds is thoroughly vintage without being remotely outdated. Does it look like I’m here? is sublime and heartily recommended for lovers of electronic music.
