Bryan Derballa, frontside nosegrind, Christchurch. Photo: David Read. During Bryan's jaunt in New Zealand he conquered many a spot, got the cover of New Zealand Skateboarder with a sizable Smith grind and turned many heads. He is now enjoying a successful life as a freelance photographer back home in the States. He is also on staff at The Wall Street Journal. No shortage of talent there.
In the year 2002 we thought it’d be a swell idea to make a calendar for the following year. The calendar was a one of a kind for us, maybe not the brightest business idea we have had, but for those who did buy it it was well received. As there was a limited amount of these calendars produced many people would have not seen these images, so here they are preserved in their original monthly format. January through June now, July through December to come. Check out cover boy Bryan Derballa’s website here.

Joseph Whaanga, switch frontside flip, Wellington. Photo: David Read. The infamous and short lived (no surprises there) breakin spot at OC.

Andrew Haeata, switch backside lipslide, Wellington. Photo: David Read. Another example of pure talent. Where you at Muddy?

Rhys Campbell, crooked grind, Auckland. Photo: David Read. Shot at the defunct Oriental Markets. Home to numerous Skateboard Nationals, music video sets, aerosol enthusiasts and male model calendar shoots.

Glenn Wignall, crooked grind pop over stairs, Wellington. Photo: David Read. Not many people stepped to this spot and a majority of those that did got served. GW is an original ripper.

Matt Scarrott, alley-oop frontside 360 ollie, Napier. Photo: David Read. Matt is no stranger to air time and could make small work of any park this nation threw at him. Here he throws back with a huge frontside three the wrong way at the now demolished Burger King Skate Park in Napier.
More next week.
